<image:caption>Practical Life The Practical Life work allows children to participate in the care of both themselves and their classrooms. It allows the child to “Help me do it by myself.” The child learns how to concentrate and accomplish practical skills that provide a sense of accomplishment, purpose, and connection to their community. Practical Life activities lead the child into further areas of exploration.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sensorial The Sensorial Area allows children to refine their senses and provides the keys to the world. Through carefully prepared materials that isolate a particular sensory area, children learn to identify smells, weights, color gradations, length, among many other activities. This work provides the child with clear, tangible, information about their environment as well as the language to talk about it. The child learns to understand and adapt to their environment through these concrete experiences with the senses that feed the intelligence.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Language The Language Area of the classroom invites the child to read and write in ways that are natural and intuitive. We introduce children to writing and sounds and through work with senses, vocabulary, and expression they come to reading in a way that supports their development and expression of their personality. Utilizing both language and comprehension the child explores the rich language materials and gains confidence in expressing themselves</image:caption>

AMI continues to train teachers – also known as “guides” – and consult with and recognize schools. <image:caption>Montessori is a developmental approach to education, and although it has been around for more than 100 years, it is still considered a progressive education as it is child-centered and child-focused. Montessori pedagogy follows the child as children are empowered to find engaging “work” in a child-sized environment and at their own pace.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lower Elementary 6-9 years The child who enters the elementary classroom at six, is a different child from the one who attended the Primary program. This new child no longer wants to work by themselves, but rather longs for discussions with friends. This new child now has an imagination that they can use to explore new ideas rather than just working with concrete objects at hand. This new child has a reasoning mind to work through patterns and explore connections. We utilize these dynamic new attributes to create an environment specially designed for them, including tables that allow for group work, materials that pique their interest, and lessons developed to unlock ideas and allow them to explore. All of this and more becomes available to the new learner in the Lower Elementary classroom.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Upper Elementary 9-12 years The curious child of the Lower Elementary classroom moves into the Upper Elementary room having built foundational skills and the ability to do “Big Work” and learn anything they want to know. They continue to work with impressionistic charts as well as concrete materials, but they take these ideas further by learning to abstract mathematical concepts and explore connections between the areas of their world. They dive deeply into research and engage in gigantic mathematics problems.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Cosmic Education The Elementary aged child is full of imagination and cannot be confined to the classroom. We begin by telling Great Stories meant to intrigue and engage the children and their imagination and help them to put themselves and the world around them into context. We give children the keys to explore the universe both within the Montessori Elementary classroom and outside in the wider world.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Going Out The classroom is a beginning, but it is not enough for the Elementary aged children. They must get out into the world to explore both content and the way that society works at this age. When the opportunity arises children are encouraged to go out into the world to find the information they seek and to begin to understand how the world works. For example, they organize their own excursions to the pet store to buy food for the class pet or to the local bakery so they can learn more for their research paper on bread. These experiences allow the children to practice the practical skills necessary to interact with the world around them.</image:caption>

She holds a BA in English from Colgate University and an MA in English from Middlebury College. Molly is a former guide of Oak Knoll’s adolescent program; she also served OKMS for many years as chair of its annual fund and more recently on the Head of School search committee. Molly’s Montessori journey begins with her parents, who co-founded Montessori schools in Hanover, NH, and Buffalo, NY. Before she was three, Molly entered Buffalo’s public, magnet Bennett Park Montessori and graduated from its adolescent program in 1988. After eight years away from Montessori for high school and college, she began a career in school administration at Turning Point School, now in Culver City, a Montessori-based program formerly known as Montessori of West Los Angeles. After serving as Turning Point’s Director of Admissions and Communications, she moved to New York, where she served as the Director of External Relations at Brooklyn Heights Montessori School. While working at BHMS, she began a long-standing relationship with the American Montessori Society, for which she continues to serve as a Communications Consultant. Molly and her husband Mike are the proud parents of Luca, OKMS Class of 2019, now a junior at La Salle College Preparatory, and Sascha, who will graduate from OKMS’s adolescent program this spring. In her spare time Molly reads, cooks and bakes, tends a domestic and farm animal menagerie, and roots, with eternal hope, for the Buffalo Bills.</image:caption>

<image:caption>AMI was founded in 1929 by Dr. Maria Montessori to train teachers in the Montessori method. An AMI recognized school is one that upholds the highest standards in Montessori education.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Head of School Allwyn is a lifelong Montessorian, born the same year her parents founded a Montessori school in Santa Barbara. Initially, she envisioned a career in performance, with a childhood rich in theater, sports, music, and dance. However, after playing Division 1 volleyball in college, she returned to Santa Barbara, where she assisted in an Upper Elementary class and directed the school's musical theater program. This experience ignited her passion for working with children. She pursued AMI Elementary training at the Montessori Institute of San Diego in La Jolla, CA, and later participated in NAMTA's Adolescent Orientation at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio. Allwyn has taught at various levels, including lower, upper, and adolescent, and served as the Middle School Director at Santa Barbara Montessori School. Her role involved taking students on educational trips worldwide, including Art History tours in London and Paris, Western Civilization studies in Italy, American History in Washington DC, Montessori Model United Nations in New York, and field studies on Bainbridge Island and the Galapagos. Before joining the Oak Knoll Montessori School community, Allwyn was the Director of Education for Elementary at Marin Montessori School in Marin, CA, and Springmont School in Atlanta, GA. She still enjoys playing volleyball with childhood friends whenever she's in Santa Barbara. Now residing in Pasadena, CA, she shares her home with her dog, Tux, her cat, Earl, and her son, Aidan, whenever he's around. Aidan, a former Montessori student from two weeks old through eighth grade, is now a junior at Tulane University, majoring in History, Political Science/International Development, and Philosophy. Allwyn enjoys hiking, visiting museums, cooking, surfing, and reading, aiming to read at least fifty books a year.</image:caption>
